Low Tatras

The Low Tatras or Low Tatra (Slovak: Nízke Tatry) is a mountain range of the Inner Western Carpathians in central Slovakia. It is located south of the Tatras proper, from which it is separated by the valleys of the Váh and Poprad rivers (the Liptov-Spiš abasement). The valley formed by the Hron River is situated south of the Low Tatras range. The ridge runs west-eastwards and is about 80 km long.

Tourism is very popular in the Tatras. During the winter there are several ski resorts in Low Tatras, for example Jasná, Mýto pod Ďumbierom, and Tále. Not only are these hubs of hiking and cross-country skiing trails, but Jasna is the largest ski resort in Central Europe. Chopok (2,024 m) is the third highest peak of the Low Tatras range (just after the neighboring Ďumbier and Štiavnica mountains) in central Slovakia. The peak offers a panoramatic view of High Tatra, Liptov and the valley of Hron. There is a chalet (called Kamenná chata) located near the summit. Chopok is situated on the E8 European walking route, between the Ďumbier and Dereše peaks. In addition to this east-west trail, the mountain can be also reached following the hiking trails either from the north (from the Demänovská Dolina valley) or from the south (from the bus stops Trangoška and Srdiečko). The highest points accessible by a chair lift are Chopok úboč (1834 m) on the northern slope and Kosodrevina (1494 m) on the southern slope.
The northern and southern slopes rank among the best skiing terrains in Slovakia. There are three ski areas on the northern slope, with 21 km of prepared skiing tracks, two cable cars, five chair lifts, and ten ski lifts. The southern slope has chair lift and six ski lifts. The mountain is popular among freeskiers. In addition, the Jasná ski center is situated at Chopok’s northern base and the Srdiečko and Tále ski resorts at the southern base.

Demänovská cave of Liberty

Is a national nature monument located at the  northern side of the Low Tatras range. It is the longest cave system in Slovakia. The Cave has captivated visitors with the mysterious flow of the small underground Demänová River, charming pool and dozens of flowstone forms, halls and domes.

Muzeum of Orava region villages in Zuberec

The museum spreads over the meadows of Brestová below Roháče mountain in the Western Tatras. Originally these were only pastures. The mountain stream Studená, with a reconstructed mill pond for a mill and a fulling mill, runs through the museum site.
The constructions in the museum are mostly originals brought in from different locations in Orava. They were bought from their original owners, dismantled, transported and conserved, and reassembled in the museum. Replicas were made of those constructions which could not be bought or transported.
The museum is divided into five parts: Lower Orava Market place – showing a little market town with buildings form the south-western part of the region, Upper Orava Street – show-piece of a village with row houses and homesteads from the period of the Wallach colonization, Goral hamlets showing scattered homesteads in a mountain environment, Wooden church, Mill House with water technology facilities – the mill and the fulling mil.

Orava Castle

In Oravský Podzámok belongs among the most beautiful and admired Slovak castles. Orava Castle also called the „eagles nest“ on the rock, was the country seat, to which all of Orava belonged. You need to overcome more than three hundert of its stairs in order to get to the most splendid chambers of this mediaval fortress that is perched on the top of a mountain. It was distinguished Protestant priest Juraj Tranovský, who was a pastor at Oravský Podzámok and significantly influenced the religious beliefs of locals. You can also find here the epitaph and gravestone of Palatine Gyorgy Thurzo.
